Forensics and Futures: Navigating AI-Enabled Evidence Manipulation Risks in 2026

Digital forensics faces fundamental shift as adversaries construct, poison, and manipulate evidence using AI automation at scale. Attackers modify log entries, alter timestamps, fabricate authentication events, and rewrite metadata to evade detection systems. Primary threat shifts from missing evidence to accepting falsified evidence as genuine. Examiners must deliberately test artifact consistency across independent sources, validate timestamps, and check for gaps whilst automation helps speed but cannot solve adversarial authenticity challenges.
