The European Commission’s roadmap for effective and lawful access to data for law enforcement invites Europol to develop into a centre of excellence for operational expertise in digital forensics and step up coordination with national authorities and private parties from 2026. The Commission will present a Technology Roadmap on encryption in 2026 to identify and evaluate solutions enabling lawful access to encrypted data by law enforcement whilst safeguarding cybersecurity and fundamental rights. Support will be provided for developing new decryption technologies to equip Europol with next-generation decryption capability from 2030.
